Frans Makken (1953) is an economist by education. In 1981 he joined the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations and was posted in Dhaka, Bangladesh and subsequently at FAO HQ in Rome, Italy, dealing with Food Security. In 1986 he took the position of research coordinator at the Agro-Economic Research Institute in The Hague, under aegis of the Ministry of Agriculture, responsible for the development and management of research projects in West Africa and Asia.
In 1994 Frans Makken moved to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague, as Inspector of the Policy and Operations Evaluation Department, responsible for the evaluation of Dutch development programmes in partner countries. In 2001 he was posted as Deputy Ambassador in Hanoi, Vietnam, followed by a posting as Representative to the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah from 2005 to 2008.
In the period 2008-2012, he was Ambassador in Kigali, covering Rwanda and Burundi. He then moved back to the Foreign Ministry in The Hague as Inspector at the Inspectorate responsible for the operational audit of Netherlands’ Embassies around the world. In August 2015, Frans Makken started his assignment as Ambassador in Nairobi, covering Kenya, Somalia and the Seychelles.
Frans Makken is accompanied by his wife, Lina Stam. They have three children.
